Target Hardening Scheme

Do you, friends or family have adequate level of home security? If the answer is no or you are not sure, and you (or them) lives in the North East Derbyshire district, then the man you need is Ian Fisher.  Ian is the handyperson for the North East Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership and based at the Home Improvement Agency at the Market Place in Chesterfield.

How does the scheme work?

The North East Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership identify areas within the district that have being experiencing higher than average incidents of domestic burglaries.  These findings are a result of analysis of police crime data by the Partnership Analysis.

In consultation with our partner agencies and further detailed examination of the data, hotspot areas within the district have being selected for the Target Hardening scheme.  The areas chosen are those to be most at risk from crime with the highest number of incidence within the district.  These incidents are still very low when compared with national or county averages, but we endeavour to bring down the level even further.

There are two facets to the scheme.  In one aspect, households that are identified to be in the hotspot areas are contacted by letters.  Surveys are then carried out by Police Officers and Partnership staff to establish the level of security in the properties. If the level of security does not meet the required basic standard that have being recommend by the Home Office, we will be able to offer an upgrade to meet the required standard at no cost to the householder.

The other aspect is through referral system.  Referrals are made to the scheme by the Police, Victim Support for victims of crime, Women’s Aid, Home Management Officers, and the Home Improvement Agency.  We also accept self referral.  Where the referral system is used, a survey is carried out and the required measure is taken to bring the property up to the recommended level.  If not present, smoke alarms are fitted to all properties.

This scheme has already been implemented in sections of Heath and Holmewood, Killamarsh, Coal Aston, North Wingfield, Grassmoor, Renishaw, and Clay Cross to name a few.  Over 1500 properties have been surveyed and upgraded since 2003, resulting in significant reduction in domestic burglary figures.  Our man Ian is presently working at Danesmoor and Holmewood, with Eckington in the pipeline in the very near future.

We aim to continue these schemes and replicate, or improve on the success showed in these areas that have benefited by the scheme.  We are committed to drive down crime in our district and make it one of the safest places in the country to live.

If you are concerned about the level of security of your property and would like to have a survey done, fill in the self-referral form.  We will do a survey and upgrade your security to meet the recommended basic standard if required, or we can arrange for a Police Crime Prevention Officer (CRO) to call in and give you expert crime prevention advice.
