Home Security
The best way to reduce your chances of being burgled is to keep your home secure - a lot of burglaries are 'spur of the moment' opportunist crimes that can be avoided if you take the right steps.
We've put together a list of basic tips which will help to make it harder for the burglars and keep you and your valuables safe.
Top tips to beat the burglars
Lock the door and close the windows when you go out – even if your are popping out for just a short time.
Window locks, especially on older windows will help stop people getting in (a burglar is less likely to break in if they have to smash a window).
Deadlocks make it much harder for a thief to get out again - if you have them use them, but don’t leave the key near the door or in an obvious place.
Spare keys shouldn't be kept outside or in a garage or shed, and put car keys or garage keys out of sight in the house.
Timers for lights and radios create the impression that someone is in if you need to be away from home overnight.
Burglar alarms which are visible, good lighting and carefully directed security lighting can put burglars off. Make sure that lights don’t disturb your neighbours, and that alarms turn off after 20 minutes.
Fences at back of properties may make this area more secure, but walls and solid fences may let a thief break in without being seen. A good compromise is chain-link fencing or trellises with prickly shrubs.
Door 'spy holes' allow you to see who is at the door and having a chain means that you can open the door a little way to talk to them.
Who can help you with home security?
Tenants
Your landlord has some responsibility towards security if you rent your house or flat. Ask if they will make the necessary improvements if your home is not secure.
If you live in social housing or in a block of rented flats, forming a tenants’ association might make security easier.
Homeowners
It is a good investment spending money on security measures even though it can seem daunting. It will last a long time and can add value to your property.
The North Derbyshire Home Improvement Agency can carry out a security check on your home, advice you on what needs to be done and may be able to help fit security devices.
You can also contact the North East Derbyshire Crime Reduction Officer for help and advice (details below).
