A lot of crime is against bicycles, motorbikes, cars and vans - including the theft of the vehicles themselves and the theft of their contents. Most of it can be prevented.
These guidelines will help reduce the chances of your vehicle being taken or broken into.
Bicycles
- Get a good bike lock - D locks or combination locks are best.
- Lock your bike to something secure – a bike rack or lamppost.
- Lock up removable parts (e.g. wheels) or take them with you.
- Have your bike security marked or engraved.
Motorbikes
- Always lock your bike and set its alarm if it has one.
- Lock your bike to something secure when you leave it. At home you can fit special attachments to lock your bike to.
- Use a motorbike cover.
- Have your bike marked with its vehicle identification number (VIN).
Cars and Vans
- When leaving your vehicle – for any length of time - lock the doors and close the windows.
- Remove the ignition key and engage the steering lock.
- Don’t leave anything on display – take all contents with you or lock them in the boot. For all a thief knows even a carrier bag may contain valuables.
- Never store your documents, such as the log book, insurance or MOT certificates, inside.
- Think about having the windows etched with the vehicle registration number (VRN) and note its chassis number.
- Keep your keys in a safe place, even in the house, so that if anyone breaks in they cannot get your car/van too.
- If you have an older vehicle, a Thatcham-approved immobiliser can help secure it.
